$929 million from Transportation Department would connect Los Angeles and San Francisco.
In 2008, California voters approved building a high-speed rail to connect Los Angeles to San Francisco, nearly 500 miles of track. The project, with an original budget of $10 billion in bond money, was supposed to be finished by 2020 but faced many delays.
In 2019, the previous administration had revoked all federal money given to the project. This past Friday, the Department of Transportation restored the grant money necessary to help spur on the rail line.
Governor Newsom anticipates this money will help with job creation and further planning. Officials now estimate that environmental approval will be received by 2023, and the rail line will be up and running at full capacity by 2029.
